The most straightforward way to optimize signal strength is to measure signal strength, interactively, as I move the receiver around my residence.

How can the customer--like myself--accomplish this?

Please try to respond using as many details as possible. Usually that means many words, many sentences, many details. Let's try to keep this conversation to a single exchange, in which you tell more than I need to know about directly measuring signal strength. I will ignore the parts I don't need.
